Columbus, North Carolina Gateway to the Appalachian Mountains
Columbus’ Story
Columbus, North Carolina, is located in the foothills of the scenic Appalachian Mountains. Unlike most communities' towns or cities in western North Carolina, Columbus was deliberately carved from 100 acres of pure wilderness on what was then known as Foster Race path in the shadow of Fosters Mountain, known today as Chocolate Drop.
Dr. Columbus Mills, for whom the town was named, has been called the "Father of Polk County." One of his ancestors, Colonel Ambrose Mills, was a Loyalist who was hanged by Patriots after his capture at the Battle of Kings Mountain. It was largely through Mills' efforts as a state senator that Polk County was established, by sectioning off parts of Rutherford and Henderson Counties. In his honor, Columbus was officially designated as county seat of Polk County in 1855.
Columbus was originally laid out with a church at each corner of the main streets. Two of these are in their original location today. The first structure - Columbus Baptist Church, established in 1857, is still in use, although it has been added to over the years. Columbus Presbyterian Church, established in 1895, is also in the original location but due to a fire the original building has been replaced. The Town of Columbus is distinguished by an imposing courthouse, built of handmade brick in 1855. The ancient slave block still remains on the courthouse lawn as a daily reminder of those troubled times.
Since before the turn of the century, people have been drawn to this beautiful "Gateway to the Mountains" with its temperate climate and its recreational, cultural, and equestrian traditions. There is something here for everyone of all ages and interests.
